I married Martin in a civil ceremony June 1968. An intermarriage, although I had agreed that the children and our home would be Jewish. By January 1971 I realized..who was I kidding? If Marty and our children and home were to be Jewish, why would I not want to be Jewish also? A dip in the mikveh in Chicago, a new name of Ruth added to Allyson Michael Maria Cook Gall and no longer was it an intermarriage. No guarantees but our youngest married his true love, lovely Chinese-American woman, in a civil ceremony June 2006. Judy Nee became Yehudit in May 2007. They are 28 and belong to a Conservative shul where Yoni reads Torah and Judy carries it on a regular basis! They intend that their kids,when they have them, will speak English, Hebrew and Chinese. All of this is to say...I want my kids to care how their childen are raised and recognize that it will be mom and dad together who will raise them. Whatever decision is made should be made in a very serious way. And we would love it if they choose Jewish...
