Too often we ignore what's going on in the heads of the attackers, and we ASSUME there are some benign causes motivating them (like poverty, or past wrongs) -- but when Islamic fundamentalism is what's going on in the background, the situation is simply unsolvable... except through force. It's no different than back in WWII, when giving the Nazis large chunks of Europe did nothing to stop them.
