The Onion has a parody listicle called ”The 10 Worst Bar Mitzvahs“:
”March 25, 1995 — Stamford, CT: Aaron Wechsler f–ked up the V’ahavta big time, and couldn’t pull it together for the avot and gvurot.”
Lots of insidery jokes like this, over vintage pics of apparently real-life bnai mitzvah, no doubt culled from Onion staffers.
In December, Saturday Night Live had a skit, “Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy,” in which Vanessa Bayer delivers a spot-on parody of every bar mitzvah speech you ever suffered through, including the sing-song delivery, the mandatory baseball reference, and the loving jokes about brothers and sisters (“Don’t tell my parents I said that”).
Call it the revenge of the Jews: Jokes that are best appreciated by less than 2 percent of the population, and the gentiles unlucky enough to be invited!
