With the latest injury to Matt Schaub, Sage Rosenfels will take over as QB for the Houston Texans for the foreseeable future.

This is not a foreign role for Rosenfels, now in his eighth year in the NFL. He stepped in admirably last season, too.

Filling in for an injured Schaub then, too, Rosenfels had a 4-1 record as a starter — helping the Texans to a franchise best 8-8 record — completing 87 of 136 passes (63.9 %) for 951 yards, with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. For the season, Rosenfels was 154 for 240 (64.2%) with 15 TDs and 12 INTs in nine games.

According to Houston Chronicle sportswriter John McClain (that’s McClain), “The best decision Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak made in the offseason was to not trade … Rosenfels to Minnesota.”

McLain further assesses Rosenfels ability thus: “For the last two seasons, I’ve watched Schaub and Rosenfels in practice and in games, and I consider them to be 1 and 1a, not 1 and 2. Most of the time, Rosenfels has been terrific when thrust into precarious situations. I think he could start for a lot of teams.”

The Texans are current 3-5, in fourth place in the AFC Southern Division.
