I’m Chass sayin’…
Steve Goldman of Baseball Prospectus handles the “dot com desk” of the Yankees Hot Stove program on the YES network. This brief video segment considers Tim Raines as a potential Hall of Fame candidate. I was surprised to see Murray Chass as a member of the on-air speaking heads (I’ve never seen this program before, but the fact that I’m a Mets fan has nothing to do with it).
Goldman, the author of a 2005 biography on Casey Stengel (and profiled in NJ Jewish News), was in a different studio, a good thing given Chass’ stated animus regarding Baseball Prospectus’ statistical nature.
But in a follow-up email to the Korner, Goldman said, in the spirit of lashon hara (not speaking maliciously of others):
Chass’s hostility to BP concepts is public knowledge. We reached out to him — more than once — but he wasn’t interested. I regret that, because we all respect his career accomplishments and I’m sure there’s a lot we could learn from him (just as he could learn from us).
