Alan Freedman, “Hall” of a guy

Alan Freedman, director of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Commack, NY, was the featured speaker the Pine Brook (NJ) Jewish Center’s men’s club annual breakfast, held Dec. 7. Pictured with Freedman, right, is men’s club president, Steve Gotthelf. (By the way: Ron Mix, who played for the San Diego Charger and Oakland Raiders and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979 — and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 — is the subject of the painting.)

Freedman discussed the history of Jews in the arena of American athletics, from the playing field to the broadcast booth to the owner’s office. Inductees into the Hall include such luminaries such as Sandy Koufax, Mark Spitz, Hank Greenberg, Red Auerbach, Herb Brown, Warner Wolf, and Howard Cosell.
