Helena Mayer and the Berlin Olympics

Helena Mayer was a Olympic Gold Medalist fencer who represented Germany in the 1936 Berlin summer games.

Why would this German Jewish woman agree to bring honor to a country that had rejected her? Why would Germany want a Jew to be part of the German National Team?

These questions form the basis of The Helena Mayer Story, a documentary by Semyon Pinkhasov that examines the motives on both sides. YIVO, the Institute for Jewish Research, will screen the film, on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at 15 West 16th Street in Manhattan.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Pinkhasov and James Traub, a contributor to The New York Times Magazine, Foreign Affairs and other publications.

Admission is $10, $7 for members. For information, call 212-868-4444.

Thanks to Jeff Bukantz, captain of the 2008 U.S. Olympic fencing team, for the heads up on this one.
