More on Marquis

So is that Marquis of Staten Island, instead of Queensberry?

Anyway…

The Denver Post had this to say about the Rockies’ new acquisition:

Marquis, 30, is not an ace, but the Rockies are counting on him to add stability to the back of the rotation. He welcomes the challenge.

That’s like telling a parent, “You’re kid’s not the best looking I’ve ever seen…” Seems a bit harsh, even if true, especially when you’re welcoming someone into the fold.

The Rocky Mountain News reported Marquis as saying, “I’m excited to come to Colorado and start fresh and help this team and be a piece of the puzzle that can get this team back to where they were in ’07.”

Let’s see how Marquis feels about his new teammates in a few months. In 2006, the ball club raised eyebrows because a number of the players followed a”Christian lifestyle.”

According to a June 1, 2006 article in USA Today,

On the field, the Rockies are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons and only the second time in their 14-year history. Behind the scenes, they quietly have become an organization guided by Christianity — open to other religious beliefs but embracing a Christian-based code of conduct they believe will bring them focus and success.

Later in the article,

The Rockies’ approach is unusual in that religious doctrine is a guide for running a franchise. The club’s executives emphasize they are not intolerant of other views.

We try to do the best job we can to get people with the right sense of moral values [emphasis added], but we certainly don’t poll our players or our organization to find out who is Christian and who isn’t,” says [general manager Dan] O’Dowd, who says he has had prayer sessions on the telephone with club President Keli McGregor and manager Clint Hurdle. “I know some of the guys who are Christians, but I can’t tell you who is and who isn’t.”

The Nation reported on the situation in this article by our old friend Dave Zirin.

Good luck, Jason. We’ll say a prayer for you. If nobody minds, of course.
