Suffolk Y to host program on Jews and soccer
The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Comack, NY will host “Our Lives and The Beautiful Game: Jews in Soccer,” a panel discussion, on Sunday, March 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Scheduled to appear are:
- Gloria Averbuch, author of The Vision of a Champion and It’s Not About the Bra
- Shep Messing, who played seven seasons in the NASL and six in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was also a member of the U.S. Soccer Team at the 1972 Olympics and a two-time second-team All-American at Harvard.
- Sara Whalen, who played for the U.S. Women’s team from 1997-2000, helping them win the Women’s World Cup in 1999. He also received a Silver Medal as part of the U.S. Women’s team at the 2000 Olympics.
- Jack Bell, soccer writer for The New York Times
The discussion will be moderated by David Hirshey, a book editor and sportswriter who has written extensively about soccer in ESPN the Magazine and the Times.
