All we are saying is give Dmitiry Salita a chance

The first comes from our old friend Ron Ross on whether the fighter is facing a double standard, as per Nomas-nyc.com:

Let’s call it the Ethnic Divide. Latin fans generally root for Latin fighters, Irish fans for Irish fighters, Italian fans for Italian fighters, African-Americans for African-American fighters and Jewish fans for Jewish fighters. It’s the way things are and there is nothing wrong with it as long as it remains in the arena of fair competition. It is not prejudice, at least not in the accepted sense of the word. In fact, it is one of the backbone elements in matchmaking – the crowd coming out and rooting for the local kid. “Local” is defined by more than just the neighborhood. But it can tailspin into the ultimate in ultra-poor sportsmanship when a fighter’s winning efforts and recognition of accomplishments are not merely consistently minimized, but are mocked because of it. Anytime a fighter goes to the well thirty times and comes back without a defeat he deserves praise, cheers and admiration – unless he comes from a place other than the Planet Earth. Dmitriy Salita is not an extra-terestrial.

While some might look at the string of Salita’s opponents with with crooked eye, Ross insists the young boxer, “did not build his record on humpty-dumpties or tomato cans.”

Which leads to the second offering by our new friend, SI.com’s Jeff Pearlman, who wonders when Salita will get a chance at a title bout.

Salita’s next fight… is against Raul Munoz. You have almost certainly never heard of him. Nor, for that matter, has Salita.

“Very frustrating,” said Salita. “A long time ago, I was told I’d face discrimination in this sport, being white and Jewish. As a Jew, they told me people would assume I already have money, and that I wouldn’t be hungry enough. And as a white guy, I was told I’d have to work twice as hard to gain respect. I’ve never made excuses, but I’ve always remembered that.”

(That’s kind of funny. They told black baseball players about 60 years ago that they would have to work twice as hard to gain respect.)

If Salita is turned into matzo farfel by a Kotelnik or Ricky Hatton or Willy Blain, well, he slinks off into the sunset and pursues his next goal of earning a law degree. “They give me a title shot and I get killed,” said Salita, “and I promise HBO, I will never bother them again.”

But what if Salita, the “Chosen One,” wins? What if the kid with the funny name, the quick fists and the phylacteries steps up and gives boxing its first Jewish junior welterweight champion since Barney Ross more than 70 years ago?

For boxing, once the sport where million-dollar dreams came true, what’s to lose?

Comments

  • That’s pretty cool. My father always used to talk about the great Jewish fighters like Barney Ross.

  • To be fair it is not really HBO who is not giving Salita a chance, it is people who work for HBO. HBO as an organization
shouldn’t discriminate based on color, race, religious believes. However, Luis Barragan told Salita “You are not spanish, we don’t have a market for you.” It was discussed yesterday on Russian Jewish Radio in New York. The audience took a vote and came to conclusion that HBO’s discrimination of Salita is antisemitic, and it will be as long as Luis Barragan is director of programming.

P.S. Also, what hope does it give to jewish youth, even if you are number one but not spanish – you are not gonna get a chance. People like Luis Barragan shouldn’t work on HBO, he is damaging Salita and HBO at the same time, what he is doing is wrong, wrong, wrong.
When Salita challenged world champion Gavin Reyes, Barragan said we don’t have finance for this fight…
When Salita is about to fight Kotelnik, Barragan is working out the deal under the table to match him with Ortiz. I call it antisemitism and corruption at the same time

  • Seva Kaplan proposed american jewish community should cancel HBO as well

#2. Let them feel that we exist, let show them our jewish fist, every jewish family from East to West cost should cancel HBO. If Louis Barragan wants HBO to be only for latinos, Germany only for Germans – let it be this way.
You are boycoting Salita, we american jews will answer you with jewish boycot of HBO. We can survive without HBO, especially at the time of recession.

Seva Kaplan proposed russian jews should cancel HBO

#1. There hundreds of thousands russian jews in New York thousands of them have HBO if we cancel HBO subscription perhaps they will aknowledge that we exist, not only spanish viewers – for anti-semitism we should punish them moneywise. So, when you call your cable and ask to cancel HBO, reason – discrimination of jewish boxer Dmitriy Salita

  • thanks very much, great information. Keep up the great work.

  • What do you expect from a greedy man, who betrayed his own people.
Bob Arum betrayed jews, judaism, he goes against the Rebbe, and it’s not good.
Bob Arum worships gold not G-d, he will end up like those jews who worshiped golden caf

  • There were of course many excellent to great Jewish fighters from the period spanning WWI thru the 1940s. It is silly to place Salita among them. I follow the sport very closely and Dmitri has built up an undefeated record while studiously avoiding any fighter who could conceivably be ranked in the top thirty of the jr. welterweight division. Moreover, he has failed to blow away the second and third-rate journeymen he has faced, often struggling with them. He simply has not paid his dues and sounds ridiculous claiming that he is the best in the world at that weight – yes, he has claimed that more than once – and that he is being avoided because he is a Jew. Leonard, Tendler and Ross took on all comers on their march to the top. Salita is not worthy to carry their spit buckets.
