How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm?

Loyal Korner reader Jeff Fraum has a question: What’s up with the Diamondbacks? Why aren’t they giving Josh Whitesell a shot? (Actually that’s two questions. So sue me; I’m a writer not a mathematician.)

A first baseman with the Reno Aces — the D’backs AAA affiliate in the Pacific Coast League — Whitesell is batting .364 with 2 home runs and 14 runs batted in in 19 games this year. Currently, the position on the big club is split between Chad Tracy (.236/1 HR/ 6 RBI) and 36-year-old Tony Clark (.167/2/3).

Whitesell, who turned 27 April 14, has excelled throughout his minor league career; last year he hit 36 doubles, 26 homers, drove in 110, and had a .328 average. All right so he strikes out a lot (136 times last season), but so what? He was also named the PCL Rookie of the Year and selected by Baseball America as a Triple A All-Star. As a late-season call-up, he wnet 2-7, including his first major league home run, a ninth-inning, pinch-hit, solo job against the Rockies’ Steve Register on Sept. 21.

Hope to see you soon, Josh.
