Remembering New York’s old ballparks

In this column from the Jewish Press, Irwin Cohen reminisces about the good old days of Ebbets Field, the Polo Grounds, and the original Yankee stadium.

While the recollections are warmly presented, his predictions for this season might raise an eyebrow or two. Not that he’s alone in that regard. Conventional wisdom is a bit topsy-turvy.

Like many of his fellow prognosticators, Cohen chose the Yankees, Indians, and Angels to take the East/Central/West divisions, respectively. In the senior circuit, he chose the Mets, Cubs and Diamondbacks.

Have a look at the actual standings as of noon today. Granted, it’s still early, but it’s still interesting to see that no one is running away with anything. The Mets have benefited from a recent seven-game winning streak, the Yankees (so far) are mediocre; perhaps A-Rod’s return will spice things up. The Indians (last place) are underachieving, as are the Diamondbacks (six games under .500). The Cubs are in the middle of the pack and the Angels trail the Rangers (Kinsler and Feldman!) albeit only by 1/2 game.
