Bill Russell’s tribute to Red
NBA legend Bill Russel has just come out with a new biography of his friend, mentor, and coach, Red Auerbach.
From the Bay State Banner:
“Red and Me” also details the friendship the two men established during a racially explosive time and despite their obvious cultural differences — Auerbach was a short, fiery Brooklyn-born descendent of Russian Jews, while Russell was a towering native of strictly segregated West Monroe, La.
“We’re from two different tribes,” said Russell.
Auerbach was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1979 and the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
The book, written with Alan Steinberg, is published by Harper Collins.
