JML update: Games of June 8
On the ups: Jason Marquis (Rockies) won his NL-leading eighth game as Colorado beat the Cardinals, 5-2. He allowed two runs in 6.2 innings and was 1-3 at the plate with a run scored. FYI, the last time a Jewish pitcher led his league in victories, it was Steve Stone for the 1980 Baltimore Orioles. he was the AL Cy Young winner that season. Craig Breslow (Athletics) pitched just a third of an inning, but it was enough to pick up his sixth hold of the year, as Oakland beat his former team, the Twins, 4-3.
On the downs: The Blue Jays dealt Scott Feldman (Rangers) his first loss of the season, beating him 6-3. Feldman gave up four runs in six innings. His record drops to 5-1. The observant reader will notice that Marquis and Feldman have been pitching on the same day recently. Unfortunately, their teams do not meet during the regular season, so barring a confluence of unlikely events (a trade or a vast improvement by the Rockies, where Marquis has almost 33 percent of the team’s wins), there’s no way they’ll oppose each other on the mound.
Pareve: John Grabow (Pirates) pitched a scoreless eighth (very economical: seven pitchs, all strikes), but Atlanta defeated Pittsburgh 7-6 in 15 innings. Gabe Kapler (Rays) hit is first homer of the year — a two-run shot off Andy Pettitte — but the Yankees beat Tampa Bay, 5-3. Ian Kinsler (Rangers) was 1-4 with a walk. Josh Whitesell (Diamondbacks) had two hits and a walk with an RBI, but San Doego beat his Arizona team, 6-3.
DNP: Scott Schoeneweis (Diamondbacks, restricted list); Brad Ausmus (Dodgers, no game); Ryan Braun (Brewers, no game); Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox, no game)
