Clearing the air

A couple of alert hoops fans wrote in to inform us of that Omri Casspi was not the first Israeli ever selected in the NBA draft, just the first to be selected in the first round.

According to Bob Wechsler, author of Day By Day in Jewish Sports History, noted:

Doron Sheffer was a second-round pick but decided not to sign. Lior Eliyahu and Yotam Halperin were picked 44th and 53rd, respectively, in the draft three years ago.

Mickey Berkowitz and Oded Katash had offers from NBA teams but were never drafted and never signed.

“Mike,” another eagle-eyed reader, also wrote that Sheffer “was selected by the LA Clippers in the 1996 NBA draft, but chose to play with Maccabi Tel Aviv.”
