JML update: Games of July 22

On the ups: John Grabow (Pirate) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out won, as Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee 8-7 in a game that saw seven home runs hit (see Braun, below). Ian Kinsler (Rangers) hit his 23rd home run and swiped his 21st base following being hit by a pitch to lead off the game, inching closer to the elite 30/30 club.

On the downs: Scott Schoeneweis (Diamdonbacks), gave up the game-losing home run in the Rockie’s 4-3 win over Arizona. He’s now 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA. Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox) was 0-4 as Boston dropped its fifth straight with their loss to Texas. Another consideration: what will the acquisition of first baseman Adam LaRoche from the Pittsburgh Pirates mean? Will Youk move across the diamond to third base — where he played last night — on a regular basis? Gabe Kapler (Rays) was 0-1 as a pinch hitter and tayed in the game as a rightfielder in Tampa’s 4-3 loss to the White Sox.

Pareve: Ryan Braun (Brewers) had a home run and double in five at bats, scored two runs and drove in four, but Milwaukee still dropped the game to Pittsburgh. Josh Whitesell (Diamondbacks) was 1-4 against the Rockies.

DNP: Craig Breslow (As), Jason Marquis (Rockies), Scott Feldman (Rangers), Brad Ausmus (Dodgers), Ryan Sadowski (Giants)

Come back soon: Aaron Poreda (White Sox) was optioned to AAA Charlotte after last night’s game. He was 1-0 with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings and a 2.45 ERA since being called up from AA Birmingham on June 9, leading one to wonder why they can’t find a reason to keep this guy around.
