JML Update: Games of Aug. 12

First if all, our best wishes go out to Scott Schoeneweis (Diamondbacks), who was placed on the disabled list on Monday for the continuing depression he’s gog through following the sudden death of his wife in May. Whenever a tragedy like this occurs, sportswriters remind us of that in the grand scale of things, the games aren’t that important and must be kept in perspective.

Kevin Youkilis and Mike Porcelli were suspended five games each and fined an undisclosed amount for their altercation on Monday night in the Red Sox-Tigers game. In his post-event interview, Youkilis apologized to the fans and acknowledged he didn’t set a good example for the kids that evening.

On the ups: Craig Breslow (As) earned his 11th hold of the year, striking out three batters in 1.1 innings as Oakland beat Baltimore, 6-3.

On the downs: Gabe Kapler (Rays) was 0-4 as California doubled up on Tampa, 10-5. Brad Ausmus (Dodgers) was hitless in his pinch-hitting role as the Giants beat their long time rivals 4-2 in 10 innings. Ryan Braun (Brewers) was 1-5 with a run scored as Milwaukee fell to the Padres, 6-5.

Pareve: Josh Whitesell (Diamondbacks) was 2-4 with two RBI in Arizona’s 6-4 loss to the Mes. The two hit nudges his batting average over the .200 mark again. Sam Fuld (Cubs) enetered the game as a defensive replacement and got a hit in his only at bat (and scored a run), but Chicago dropped the game to Philadelphia, 12-5, in Pedoor Martinez’s return to the big leagues.

DNP: Youkilis and Schoeneweis; Ian Kinsler (DL) and Scott Feldman (Rangers); Jason Marquis (Rockies), John Grabow (Cubs)

Adam Greenberg may not be a Jewish Major Leaguer at the moment, but he was the subject of a Sports Illustrated piece this week, looking at his attempts to return to the bigs after his lone plate appearance in 2005. Of course, the Korner scooped them on this a month ago.
