JML Update: Games of Aug. 26
On the ups: Normally, I would do this, since his team lost, but gotta give Gabe Kapler (Rays) some dap: he accounted for all of Tampa Bay’s runs with a two-run homer in a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. John Grabow (Cubs) picked up his 19th hold of the years in a 9-4 win over the Nationals.
On the downs: Ian Kinsler (Rangers), 0-4 in a 9-2 loss to the Yankees.
Pareve: Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox) was 1-4 with two strikeouts as Boston beat the White Sox again. He was also the subject of this piece in the Boston Globe. I love his honesty in the column by veteran sports scribe Dan Shaughnessy. It has to be wearing, answering the same (stupid) questions every day. Wait until the post-season (if any for the Red Sox) when the media starts assigning non-sports personnel to do stories. (“If you were a tree, what tree would you be, Mr. Youk…How do you pronounce your name again? Youk-eye-lis?”) I was working on a book about the final year of the Montreal Expos and spent the final homestand with the team. Frank Robinson was the manager at the time and even an outsider could tell that he and the media were just tired of the same old, same old by that point. Being at the pre-and post-game press conferences was just awkward.
Ryan Braun (Brewers) was 3-4 with a walk, double, and run scored, but it wasn’t enough as the Reds eked out a 4-3 win in 10 innings. Sam Fuld (Cubs) came into the Chicago-Washington game as a defensive replacement.
DNP: Scott Schoeneweis (DL) and Josh Whitesell (Diamondbacks); Scott Feldman (Rangers); Jason Marquis (Rockies); Brad Ausmus (Dodgers); Craig Breslow (As).
