It’s a poor workman who blames his tools
The Associated Press reports that the Mets, on the heels of their dismal 70-92 season, have realigned their coaching staff. Like they’re the ones who made the errors. Like they’re the ones who gave up soul-crushing, game-losing home runs. Like they’re the ones made the base-running blunders associated with Little League play.
Anyway, goodbye to first base coach Luis Alicea. Guess he didn’t yell “Back!” loudly enough. Goodbye to Sandy Alomar Sr. and third base coach Razor Shines, who will be reassigned within the organization. The third base coach seems to get the most heat, as he has to make the split second decision whether to send a runner. How many times were the Mets gunned down at the plate? How much of that falls on Shines, and how much on the player?
Hitting coach Howard Johnson, pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Randy Niemann will be back in their same positions next season. This is kind of surprising, since the Mets didn’t hit or pitch particularly well.
