Jewish HoF hosts program on ‘the other football’
The “other” football is the most popular sport in the world and Jewish players, coaches, and executives have made their mark in this sport.
The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum hosts “Our Lives and The Beautiful Game: Jews in Soccer” on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m.
Panelists include:
- Gloria Averbuch, author The Vision of a Champion and It’s Not About the Bra
- Shep Messing, a two-time second-team All-American at Harvard and member of the U.S. Soccer team at the 1972 Olympics who played seven seasons in the NASL and six in the Major Indoor Soccer League
- Jack Bell, who writes the weekly soccer column for The New York Times, as well as a contributor for soccer publications such as FIFA Magazine, Striker, and Futbol Mundial
- Andrei Markovits, a professor at the University of Michigan who has widely written on global soccer
- Ethan Zohn, a pro soccer player who co-founded Grassroots Soccer, an organization that raises money to fight HIV/AIDS
- Roby Young, who played for the New York Cosmos and captained the Israeli National and Olympic teams.
David Hirshey, a book editor and sportswriter, serves as moderator for the program.
Admission is $10, $5 for Suffolk YJCC members. The first 25 people to register will receive a free T-Shirt at the symposium.
