Hoop-hoop hooray

Got a couple of emails from college hoops fans, kvelling over a couple of MOTs who acquitted themselves well in the recent NIT Tip-Off tournament in Madison Square Garden.
Derek Glasser, a senior point guard from Arizona State, and Jon Scheyer, from Duke, were named to the all-tournament team.

Scheyer, also a point guard, led Duke to a 68-59 win over UConn, contributing a team-high 19 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. He was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Glasser posted 24 points, to go along with six assists and three rebounds in the consolation game against LSU, 71-52.

Duke had defeated ASU, 64-53, on Nov. 26. Scheyer scored 16 points and pulled down six boards

Will either of these hoopsters make it to the pros? Hard to say, but if they do, it would double the Jewish complexion.

Thanks to Eric Chabinsky and Jeff Flaum for pointing out the “Jewish” accomplishment.

Speaking of pros, here’s a nifty play from L.A. Lakers’ Jordan Farmar against the Nets yesterday, which just goes to show, never give up.

In 16 games this season — all coming off the bench — Farmar is averaging a little more than 17 minutes per games for the 13-3 Lakers, tossing down 6.3 points, including yesterday’s 15 points in 18 minutes with three of four shots from three-point land.

Meanwhile, Sacramento Kings rookie Omri Casspi is adjusting nicely to American basketball. In 15 games, the Israeli-born product has a 10.3 PPG average along with 3.7 rebounds, also as a bench player. The Kings are 8-8; last year they finished the season 17-65.
