Jason Marquis non-update
The Staten Island Advance published this story about their homeboy Jason, still available on the free agent market.
With John Lackey, the biggest fish in the pond, signing with the Red Sox for a reported five-year/$85 mil deal, what kind of bucks will Marquis be looking at, especially in this economy? (And if a lot of free agents dont’ sign or sign for relatively small contracts — and there were some 200 available at the end of the 2009 season — will anyone cry collusion?)
The 31-year-old right has been a lucky charm: each team he’s been on has made it to the post-season. So who would he help more? A team that’s probably going there anyway or one on the cusp? Although he’s average 12 wins a year — he was even named to the All-Star team this year, although he didn’t pitch – he’s certainly not a No. 1 or 2 starter, perhaps not even 3.
The Mets are reportedly interested but a disconcerting analysis in The Dec. 16 Star-Ledger makes me wonder if they’re going the way of the Knicks and Nets?
Brian Costa heads his piece “Offesason proving the Mates are no longer a desirable destination.”
No longer are they the prime destination for free agents they have been for the past several years. Not after a 70-92 season that leaves the direction of the organization after 2010 very much in question, from {general manager Omar] Minaya’s future to the status of manager Jerry Manuel.
…
“Guys want to go to a situation where they feel that they have a ‘good chance to win,’” Minaya said. “We know that, okay? I think what we sell here, we sell the beautiful ballpark, we sell a great city.”
Sorry, but a nice-looking ballpark is not a reason to sign. Look how the Mets stars were affected; David Wright totally lost his power. Costa quotes Minaya as saying that “…I feel very comfortable that if we get our guys, we’re going to have a very good team.” What is the the general manager supposed to say. And by they way, that’s a might big “if.” They had the horses last year and look what happened. Decimated by injury and guilty of uninspired and, at times just plain stupid, play.
