Koufax pre-spring training sighting

Sandy Koufax drops by the Mets’ spring training site to say high to his old high school buddy Fred Wilpon. It’s always an occasion.

Koufax

…also spent time talking to General Manager Omar Minaya as they watched the pitchers throw on a warm, sunny morning. Minaya may be tempted to sign the 74-year-old Koufax, who still looks to be in game shape, to be the team’s fifth starter, but just asking his opinion is enough.

Fifth starter? How about second? The maladies that caused his premature retirement seem to fit right in with the Mets’ persona. One wonders had the Hall of Fame lefty played in “modern times,” what medical miracles would have allowed him to play past the age of 30?

  • Always thought it was a bit of a shame Sandy never became involved with baseball again full-time after his playing days. I know he values his privacy, but I’m sure he would have made a great manager, or at the very least a pitching coach. Unfortunately, I never saw him pitch live and only know the highlights/legend of an all too short career. It would have been remarkable to see what his career numbers would have been if he didn’t have to retire so young too. Still, it doesn’t look like anyone ever matched his 6 year stretch of baseball dominance.
