Tennis tournament is now Peer-less
Israeli tennis star Shahar Peer had a much better time at the Dubai Tennis Championships this year, even if she did lose to Venus Williams (6-1, 6-4) in th semi-finals.
Peer was not allowed to play in the tournament a year ago when she was denied a visa by the United Arab Emirates government, citing security reasons, according to an AP story.
“Dubai organizers were fined $300,000 by the WTA for not allowing Peer to play in the event.”

Not to put too fine a line on this, but it’s difficult enough at any level to beat top-notch opponents without having to deal with other intrusions, such as politics and racism/anti-Semitism.

Strong showing by Pe’er, which was especially nice to see given the setting. Unfortunately, she ran into a Williams sister, which is pretty much an automatic loss. By the way, apparently, Shahar wasn’t the only Israeli visiting Dubai this past week. They all seem to have had productive outings.
