A return to the Bar
Remember that conflict between the boxer and the bar mitzva boy earlier this month?
The current issue of Sports Illustrated addresses it with the following, under the title “A Bar Mitzvah with a Real Mitzvah”:
Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Ballan proudly request your attendance….
Please join us as our son Scott is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah.
Place:
The House that Ruth (the Babe, not the Biblical character) built
Join us afterward for knishes in the Food Court
Ha ha.
I don’t want to appear a wet blanket, but there’s something about this that bothers me.
Where in all this is there a “real mitzvah,” a good deed? To me, this seems like just another example of conspicuous consumption.
Most kids in this situation take on a mitzvah project, but there’s no mention of that here. Does the copy editor who came up with the cutesy headline even understand whata mitzvah is?
Just curious.
