On the opening day of the U.S. Open gets underway today, Israel’s Shara Peer defeated Croatia’s Jelena Kostanic Tosic , 6-4, 7-5. Peer — the No,. 16 seed — is making her sixth Open appearance.
Other Israelis competing in the event include Harel Levy, Noam Okun, and Dudi Sela. Peer takes on
American by way of Canada Jesse Levine makes his fourth foray.

Would anyone know if Peter Polansky of Canada is Jewish? Anybody I missed? One of the”problems” these days is that it’s difficult to tell — either way — by surname and information about a person’s faith is often not available, which may be a good thing.

Not sure if Nicolas Massu is still around. He’s had some moments in Grand Slams, but his biggest feat would have to be the 2004 Olympics where he became the only player ever to win Gold in both singles and doubles, for Chile I believe.
If he’s around, he’s not participating in this year’s Open,.
