JML update: Games of Aug. 31

Well, so much for August. The Mets repeated Monday’s disaster by letting the Braves score seven times in the fifth inning (final score: 9-2), while they still can’t buy a hit with runners in scoring position. Manager Jerry Manuel proved once again he lacks either the heart, guts, or strategical acumen to pull his pitcher before he throws that last, fateful pitch.

Forgot about this piece from Monday’s New York Times. Maybe if the players would spend a bit more time thinking about the task at hand…

Excelling for Mets, Dickey Has Eye on Side Job

With another terrific performance on Sunday, R. A. Dickey continued to demonstrate that he could perform at the highest level of his sport. Now he wants to show he can do it in another sport, only not as a player.

Dickey dreams of being a ball boy at the United States Open tennis tournament….

“I think it would be really cool,” Dickey said, adding: “I’m really serious. Do you think I can do it?”

I’m praying that Dickey — who beat the Astros, 5-1, on Sunday (Jewish Heritage Day) — was playing with the reporter, who seems to have taken his suggestion way too seriously.

Can’t you just see it next year, if Dickey remains with the Mets and, by some Miracle, they’re in contention for something other than a high draft pick? “Sorry, Mr. Manager, but I can’t make my next three starts, I’m gonna be a ball boy/man at the Open!”

Anyway…

Ike Davis was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Danny Valencia went 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI as Minnesota edged the Tigers, 4-3.

Ryan Braun (Brewers) was 2-4 with a walk, but the Reds beat Milwaukee, 8-4.

Did not play: Jason Marquis (Nationals), Brad Ausmus (Dodgers), Craig Breslow (A’s)

DL: Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox), John Grabow (Cubs), Gabe Kapler (Rays), Scott Feldman and Ian Kinsler (Rangers).
