JML weekend update (Aug. 26-28)

Hurricane/tropical storm Irene played havoc with the schedule this weekend, including the cancellation of the Mets’ Jewish Heritage Game, scheduled for yesterday against the Braves. The games originally set for Saturday and Sunday will be rescheduled for a separate-admission day-night doubleheader on Sept. 8. No word yet if the Jewish Heritage event will be held.

So, onward and upward:

It escaped my attention, but when Ryan Braun homered against the Mets on Aug. 20, he became just the ninth player to record at least 150 home runs and 500 RBI in his first five Major League seasons. The elite group includes Chuck Klein (not a MOT), Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Ralph Kiner, Orlando Cepeda, and active players  Todd Helton, Albert Pujols and Mark Teixeira. Over the weekend, Braun was 5-9 with four doubles, three walks, and three runs batted in in a three-game sweep of the Cubs. He also notched his 30th stolen bases, so all he has to do is hit five home runs to join the 30-30 club for the first time. Braun leads the league in runs scored, slugging and OPS. The Brewers are in first place in the NL Central, 10.5 games up on the Cardinals, the widest margin in the majors.
