JMLs: The next generation?

Jewishbaseballnews.com posted this list of Jewish minor league “award winners” (MVPs, best pitcher, etc.)

Three — Ryan Lavarnway, Michael Schwimer, and Josh Satin — have played in the Majors this season. The rest include players from the lower minors who might still be a year or two away. Or they might not advance any further. Who knows how these things work.

For a thoughtful and poignant examination at the disparity between journey players who basically fill roster sports and have no real shot at making The Show and those with real prospects, watch Time in the Minors, by Tony Okun. The former is represented by veteran minor leaguer (and MOT) Tony Schrager, who retired in 2006 after nine seasons plugging away; I’m not sure if he’s floating around in the indy leagues somewhere or moved on to the next phase of his life. He was one of those players who always seemed on the cusp: smart, willing to do anything to help the team, but always having that one injury, that one setback that kept him from going all the way.

Let’s hope some of these J-(small-m-for-minor)-Ls go as far as they want.

Thanks to KK chaver Scott for the lead to the Jewish Baseball News list.
