The fallout from remarks by Red Sox Manager Bobby Valentine regarding JML Kevin Youkilis continues. When asked if this might be a motivating tactic, Dustin Pedroia, one of the de facto leaders of the team, suggested that such a method might work in Japan, but not in the bigs.
So will the rest of the players have to worry about when Valentine might throw them under the bus? What does that say about his leadership skills. After all, he was called in to stabilize the team after the “circus” of 2011.
I’m thinking you don’t go poking the bear. Maybe Valentine thought he would “announce his presence with authority” (as Nuke LaLoosh said in Bull Durham) by going after one of the more popular players on the team. (Pete Rose once told new manager Sparky Anderson he could chew him out in the club house if he thought it would light a fire under the rest of the Reds.) But it certainly looks like it backfired.
