All in the family: The Schwartz Brothers in the NFL

Mitchell Schwartz

Got an email from Lee Schwartz kvelling that his son, Mitchell, joins brother Geoff in the NFL. Mitchell was the Cleveland Browns’ second-round draft pick last week.

I checked on the Pro Football Reference site, but could find no other instance of Jewish brothers playing in the league.

Papa Schwartz pointed out that Geoffrey, who was out all last year with an injury, signed with the Minnesota Vikings, which has the market on MOTs, including the Wilf family, who own the team; assistant offensive line coach, Ryan Silverfield; trainer Eric Sugarman; and backup QB Sage Rosenfels, who returns for a second stint with the Vikings.

  • Great. After years of telling my boys “Jewish kids don’t play football” as a way to keep them out of the sport (yeah, I’m a bad mom – sue me)…you have to publish THIS news? (And no, we’re not related to the Schwartz family in your story.)

  • Ralph and Arnold Horween both played in the NFL in 1921-23.

They both played at Harvard under the name “McMahon” so their mother wouldn’t know they were playing such a dangerous game.

  • Thanks, Bob. Knew YOU would have the answer.
