Youkilis changes his Sox

(This only works for players going from Chicago to Boston or vice versa.)

So the sword has finally fallen: The Red Sox traded Kevin Youkilis to the White Sox in exchange for utilityman Brent Lillibridge, pitcher Zach Stewart, and cash.

The White Sox lead the AL Central; Youkilis is expected to play third, replacing Brent Morel who, ironically like Youkilis, has been plagued by back problems.

Personally, I think the whole situation was handled badly by new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, who seems to show up and disrupt the established order for no other reason than he can. True, Youkilis has been bothered by nagging injuries over the past few seasons, but for Valentine to say he questioned his motivation and desire — and then have to back track which he typically does when he puts his foot in his mouth — was just another reason why a lot of people have trouble with him.

Yes, rookie Will Middlebrooks did a great job filling in for Youkilis, but one might expect a little more respect for a three-time All-Star. In his nine years with Boston, Youkilis averaged 23 home runs, 96 RBIs, and played stellar defense at both third and first base.

One of the things I admired about him was his willingness to discuss his religion. If memory serves, he was the only active player to have a speaking part in Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story and has frequently discussed his ancestry.

In his last game with Boston, Youkilis went 2-4 with and RBI and his first triple of 2012 ast the Red Sox beat the visiting Atlanta Braves, 9-4.. He was removed for a pinch runner to a standing ovation. What a nice way to finish up. If you look carefully, you can see Valentine (#25, left of center on the screen), imploring Youkilis to come out for a curtain call, pointing at him in a “you da man” gesture, and doffing his cap in tribute. A bit late for that, I would say.

And of course, now that the ballplayer was leaving, the manager has nice things to say. But more important is what Youkilis’ teammates share:

Here’s wishing him well in his new home. Now pardon me, I have something in my eye.
