Israel faces Spain in WBC tournament
Israel will face Spain today at 1 p.m. EST. You can watch the game via the WBC website. Spain beat France yesterday, 8-0.
The starting honors go to RHP Justin Schumer, 22, who spent this season with the Class A San Jose Giants. The 6′, 180-pounder appeared in 27 games — 23 a s a starter — and was 7-4 with a 4.87 ERA.
I will not be live-blogging today’s game, so you’re on your own.
Today’s games (South Africa plays France) comes with an asterisk because the tournament rules are so involved (i.e., confusing):
*NOTE: One of the two teams in Games 3 and 4 are pre-determined; the opponent will be the team from the other Game 1 or Game 2 matchup with the same result; that is, Games 3 and 4 will match both 1-0 and 0-1 teams against each other. For example, Czech Republic will play in Game 3 of Qualifier 1 regardless of whether they win or lose Game 2; their opponent will be the winner of Great Britain vs. Canada if Czech Republic wins Game 2, or the loser of that game if they lose their game.
Here’s a happy recap form Israel’s win over South Africa on Wednesday:
Also, if you go to the WBC site, there’s a video of Adam Greenberg talking about how much being on the team means to him (which, unfortunately, was not available to post here directly).
Yalla, Israel!
