JML update, Yom Kippur edition
Hope y’all had an easy fast. Here’s a quick recap of the JMLs over the past couple of days.
The Chicago White Sox moved their Tuesday game from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. in deference to their Jewish fans and Kevin Youkilis, who went 1-4 in a 4-3 loss to the visiting Cleveland Indians. The next day, in a post-YK game, Youkilis was 1-5 with a run scored in another loss, this one 6-4. The White Sox have lost seven of their last eight games to allow the Detroit Tigers to vault into first place with a one-game lead.
On Tuesday evening, third baseman Danny Valencia and catcher Ryan Lavarnway appeared in a 5-2 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Valencia was 1-3 while Lavarnway was hitless in three at bats. Craig Breslow and Ryan Kalish did not appear for the Red Sox, while Sam Fuld did not play for the Rays. Of course, from here it’s impossible to say whether these backup players and relief pitcher were absent because of religious reasons, but I’m guessing their collective absence had nothing to do with that.
In their Wednesday night game, Breslow struck out the side in his one inning of relief, Kalish appeared as a pinch runner, and Lavarnway, as DH, was 1-4 as the Rays took that one, 4-2. Neither Valencia nor Fuld played.
Ike Davis was 0-3 in a 10-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night. On Wednesday night, Davis duplicated the feat in a 6-0 Mets win.
Ryan Braun was 1-4 in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 4-2 loss to the host Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, Braun hit his 41st home run, as well as a double, to help the Brewers to an 8-1 win. he’s still one stolen base shy of 30. The Brewers trail the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card spot by three and a half games (the Atlanta Braves have clinched the other one). Braun leads the NL in home runs and RBIs, albeit by just one 110-109 over Chase Headley of the San Diego Padres.
Ian Kinsler was 1-4 with a walk as the Texas Rangers lost their Kol Nidre game, 3-2, in 10 innings to the visiting Oakland A’s. Scott Feldman started that game pitched only four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. The Rangers inserted Feldman in the rotation in place of Yu Darvish who had been scheduled to start but called in sick with a stiff neck.
On Wednesday, Kinsler was 0-2 but walked three times as the Rangers lost to the A’s again, 9-3. They have a three-game lead over Oakland in the AL West.
Pitcher Jason Marquis is till on the disabled list for the Padres.
So on Tuesday night (remember, Youkilis played an afternoon game), teams with JMLs who played (remember, no Fuld tor Tampa Bay) were a collective 0-4.
Just sayin’.
