Marlboro USY came away with Chapter of the Year honors from the annual spring convention of Hagalil, the New Jersey region of United Synagogue Youth, which took place April 24-26 at the Somerset Crowne Plaza.

Marlboro chapter vice president Mazi Kuba and Rhyan Goldman of Metuchen USY cochaired the convention, which drew over 345 members and staff.

The Chapter of the Year award was based on the group’s social action activities and mitzva projects, which included collecting food for the Freehold Food Bank and providing support for Chai Lifeline. The award was also based on a Purim carnival at Marlboro Jewish Center that was staffed by local USY members and raised $2,000 for the region; an increase in chapter membership; the successful publication of a chapter newsletter; and the distribution of weekly e-mail message updates on chapter activities.

Mazi, 17 — a Marlboro resident and member of the Marlboro Jewish Center-Congregation Ohev Shalom — was among 27 of her fellow chapter members who attended the convention. “It was very gratifying to win this award,” she said. “It was a lot of hard work, but we’re proud of what we did.”

Other awards were: Most Improved Chapter, Pine Brook; Largest Donation to Tikun Olam, Ocean; and Largest Increase in Membership, Morris Plains. Chapters of Excellence were Bridgewater, East Windsor, Millburn, Morris Plains, and Scotch Plains.
