“Fight for Your Right”
That’s correct – Mike D was wrong. You don’t have to fight for your right to anything nowadays. Pretty much anything is allowed. This election is important for two – the economy and national defense. Those two things have nothing to do with rights. There are no rights to be won or lost in this election – the 2nd Amendment’s “Right to Bear Arms” was recently reconfirmed; the voting age isn’t getting lowered; abortion is already legal, and will stay legal one way or another; there is no mandatory military draft; and there is no real argument over lowering the drinking age. Neither candidate will legalize marijuana, so that is not a right to be gained in this election. This election season, think about the two candidates, and who will keep our country free from another attack and stabilize our economy. Maybe you think that putting the strain of supporting an entire economy on the shoulders of the wealthy and having a smaller job market is the way to go; or maybe you think that tax cuts for the wealthy will increase investment and help restabilize the economy. I won’t lecture you on the candidates; there are two articles coming out in this week’s NU about that. If you support Senator McCain, then make phone calls for his campaign. If you support Senator Obama, then organize rallies and go door to door for his campaign. In this segment of the blog, I’m not telling you who to vote for, or who to campaign for. But you have to play your part to get the person you support elected. I go to Woodbridge to make phone calls from the McCain New York/New Jersey HQ; and there’s an Obama HQ in many NJ towns like Hackensack, Paterson, and Hoboken. This election, all YOU have to do is fight for the right party.
Just want to point out to everyone – if you click on the little part at the top that says “Fight For Your Right,” it will open up a new page where you can listen to the famous Beastie Boys song “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” that I reference in this piece.
Interesting association however, the link leads to nowhere(a blank white page)…at least on my computer it does.
The first song which popped into my head when I saw the song you refrenced (even though i had never heard the song until I looked it up) was Revolution by The Beatles; similar premise but more related to your statement, “you have to play your part to get the person you support elected.”
Another applicable song quote when it comes to this election, at least in the minds of many who automatically link the word Republican with John Bush, would be the closing line of the song “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by The Who. That line is as follows – ‘Meet the new boss/Same as the old boss.’ Not that I agree, but its interesting to take a famous song’s line out of context and apply it to modern events. I might write a piece on that…
You could have a blast with Beatles songs…
Just to correct myself – I meant to write John McCain, NOT John Bush.
