Song

NU Magazine - October, 2009

My song is a soft hum.
A hum a mother would sing
as she dusts the counter tops,
or sings her youngest one to sleep.
My hum is not loud or extraordinary;
it is something you would listen to
in the solitude of a dark wood where the
spots of yellow sunshine dance to the melody.

My song has the harmony of a family of crickets
outside the bedroom window on a summer night,
And the beat of the waves as they crash against the sand,
on the lonely beach that’s only request is to be walked upon.
My song has a steady tempo, one you can cuddle up to and get comfortable with under the blankets and pillows of your childhood twin bed.

My song is clam and sometimes,
when it is all alone, my song cries.
But my song is not sad,
no, in fact, at times, there are soft bells in between notes
which add a light jingle to the melody.
And at its crescendo, my song laughs,
and sometimes gives a kiss. Soft kisses,
on the cheek, and on the lips.
My song understands, and during the rest beats, if you let it, my song will forgive.
