Watching autumn leaves

NU Magazine - October, 2009

The brittle leaves tumble past my window
Flowing like a wave from a beautiful sea
Toward the ground they fly and sit calm, steady
Glowing in a mound of red and yellow.
Why must the small children destroy autumn?
They stack those leaves without any true thought
Continuing on with their cruel onslaught
Of the beauty God made from her freedom.
I gaze in the distance and wonder here,
Why does the sun always now say goodbye?
What is it like to be able to fly?
I have lived too long to live in this fear.
The girls do not notice me look at them
Will they ever see through the mad mayhem?
