The Ultimate Answer

NU Magazine – April 2010

The beating of her foot was all I heard,
Thump, Thump, Thump,
I was creasing the page in the corners
Did she even know what I felt like?
All that time I spent studying, seemed like it had been forgotten,
The final number will show what I have been working all my life for,
Intelligence is what this small little letter exemplified.

I had to pick one, not two but one,
As I pondered,
My hand shook,
My leg was twitching uncontrollably,
I twirled my finger around my golden locks,
I put my number 2 yellow pencil in my hand,
Pressed it down on the paper,
Shattering into graphite pieces,
I had to choose one.

She cleared her voice, loud and clear,
I, however, was only thinking about which small letter to mark
She was waiting for me,
She counted down,
5…4…3…2..
My teeth started to grind,
All I could do was pick one.

I closed my eyes,
There I was on the red sofa,
Sitting in my plaid pajamas,
Sporting my metal round glasses,
Holding a big book,
Reading chapters and chapters,
Pages and pages,
Words and words,
Vowels and vowels,
Letters and letters-
Meaningless.

Until now,
The answer was there,
I circled it,
Thick and gray.
