Passover [the fifth question?]

NU Magazine - April, 2012

An exodus from dry-cleaned suits,
bottomless mugs of coffee,
and stacked papers. Now the buds
of green shoot up, dotting the path
to the open front door with Spring.

The screen door jabbers
as new faces appear and shoes
are kicked aside, along with the burden
of walking. A couch fills with laughter
and the halls ignite with conversation.

Time for descent into the holy land
of brisket, sweet potatoes, and
noodle kugel.
The matzo ball soup steams from every
fine china bowl, wafting through
the surrounding memories.

And when God guided Moses’ staff
to open the sea, was He parting
the quotidian — the suits, coffee,
paper?
Was He opening a way to breathe out
the words Next year, in Jerusalem.
