What’s cooking?

For Shabbat dinner, that is.

Tonight at our house we’ll start with raisin challah (sorry, not homemade, that’s my sister’s department), classic matzah ball soup (I like little matzah balls better than big ones), then move on to honey mustard chicken (a Skater Dude request), with rosemary roasted Brussels sprouts (never had em as a kid, love them now), steamed green beans for the anti-Brussels people, potato wedge not-quite-fries, rice, Israeli salad, picklesandolives, and anything else I throw on the table. Is that enough for 10?

And you? And do you make seperate food for the kids? I never have, resulting in a good friend’s kid once pre-eating her Shabbat meal before coming over because “Alia only serves adult food.” I wasn’t insulted.

I bake challah every week. 3 or 4 large ones, and 6 small rolls for us all to scarf down Friday lunchtime to get us in the mood for Shabbat. Yum. Chicken Soup – don’t do the matzah balls often, usually just use soup nuts. I made Southern Fried Chicken – faked the buttermilk by using 1 cup soy milk, one tbsp vinegar, let it sit for 5 mins. hey presto! I made two potato kugels – one for the freezer, one for tonight, will steam up some peas, throw on pickles and olives and chummus and babaghanoush, some fresh veggies. Dessert is chocolate cake or apple pie. (i’m exhausted)

    Shabbat Shalom!!
