From Merriam-Webster: heathen 1: a follower of a polytheistic religion (as in ancient Rome) 2: one who has little or no religion and who delights in sensual pleasures and material goods : an irreligious or hedonistic person

I once had a deep, juicy religious conversation with a Catholic girl (we were about 10) wherein I tried to show her logically how she prayed polytheistically (I’m sure I didn’t use that exact word) by way of the father, son and holy ghost idea, and to idols, ie. statues of saints. Later, in college, I found out Catholics kept the bones of saints in reliquaries to pray to. Sounds pretty heathen to me.

Yiddish is a lot more descriptive in its curses. I don’t know who to say it, but the translation is something like, may you grow like an onion in the sand, with your head buried. It loses something in the translation. Good luck!
